Is Marketing the Same as Advertising?

Marketing and advertising are related. But they denote two different activities. Marketing is a broad term referring to the whole act of telling buyers about your product and services. Advertising is part of marketing—typically a paid form of marketing. 

Knowing the contrast between the two is handy when interacting with clients or handling matters with cross-department managers. While some may notice their difference, others may need to be made aware of their true meaning. So let’s define these terminologies:

What Is Marketing?

Marketing is a long-term process that involves designing and monitoring your product, ensuring it performs well in the markets and attracts target buyers. It’s ultimately an involved process.

Relationship marketing is a typical example of marketing where you will cultivate your working relationship with customers and buyers. You may focus on improving buyers’ satisfaction rating, boosting support and nurturing in after-sales, or targeting to boost customer loyalty.

Marketing is a broader term covering advertising as a subset. After all, most advertising activities support the primary goal of marketing–developing and showcasing an appealing product or service that can generate profits.

What Is Advertising?

Now, let us look closely at advertising. As we have mentioned, most advertising tactics—such as Youtube pre-roll ads, LinkedIn sponsored posts, and Facebook ads—work together to weight-lift your marketing goals.

However, advertising often revolves around paid forms of marketing. More often, advertising will come as new campaigns that help generate more leads and sales. That means reaching out to more buyers via social media posts, brand building to strengthen your market reputation, or storytelling to depict whatever benefits you offer. 

Advertising will reveal and expose more of your marketing efforts. For example, displaying a brand message via marketing elements such as a positioning vision or statements may not be enough. That’s why advertising has to facilitate the message to get to the surface before buyers’ eyes.

You’ll also notice that most creative ideas and inventions like visuals, copies, campaigns, and videos fall under the advertising umbrella. 

Difference Between Marketing and Advertising 

Having explored the primary definitions between marketing and advertising, let us look closely at their key difference. The two related terms ultimately differ in terms of responsibility.

Marketing

The primary goal of marketing is to build and maintain your business profitability from start to finish. Because of this, marketing will cover branding, analyze trends and track down competitors. Your brand showcases your uniqueness from competitors. It showcases how you act, communicate, and invite prospective customers to make a buying decision.

Advertising 

Advertising involves a different responsibility from that of marketing. As you’ll notice, advertising will cover customer analysis, media buying, pitching advertising strategies, and the like. 

Just because marketing and advertising sound the same–or are used interchangeably–doesn’t mean they refer to the same thing. Knowing the differences between the two lets you, your clients, and your company have a productive chat when planning and strategizing on marketing and advertising.
