If you are a fan of the superhero show Stargirl, you have plenty of company. When the show premiered, thousands of viewers fell in love with high school student Courtney Whitmore as she transformed into Stargirl and assembled a band of young superheroes to battle evil in Blue Valley, Nebraska. The show is executive produced by Geoff Johns, and it features an all-star cast, including Brec Bassinger as Courtney, Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan, and Joel McHale as Starman.

Filming for Season 2 has been underway since last October, and while the show’s producers have not announced a firm date, they have indicated that Season 2 should be coming to The CW by the spring or summer of 2021. As you look forward to Season 2, here are several things about Stargirl you might not know.

Filming Didn’t Take Place in Nebraska

In the first episode of Stargirl, Courtney and her family relocate from the fast-paced world of Los Angeles to the classic middle American town of Blue Valley, Nebraska. After she finds Starman’s Cosmic Staff and superhero uniform, Courtney begins a new life of adventure in which she battles the villains and helps salvage the Justice Society of America (JSA).

While most of the action occurs in Blue Valley, filming never took place in Nebraska. Rather, the show was filmed in several locations across Georgia. Most of the scenes of downtown Blue Valley were filmed in Dallas, Georgia. With its red brick sidewalks and quaint buildings, Dallas serves as the perfect backdrop for the show. Not only does it create the right atmosphere, but it also contrasts perfectly with the sinister energy of the show’s villains. Other cities used for shooting included Atlanta, Duluth, Mableton, and Marietta. 

Many scenes from the first season of Stargirl take place at the fictional Blue Valley High School, and interestingly, there were several different schools used for filming. Douglas County High School was used for many scenes, including the school’s annual Homecoming football game. West Lake High School and Campbell Middle School in Smyrna were also used for several Blue Valley High School scenes, and the exterior shots are reportedly from Atlanta’s Booker T. Washington High School. 

There Are Many DC Comic References in the Show

Since Stargirl is a superhero show derived from DC comics, the producers have had fun including references from the DC Universe. For example, Blue Valley’s Dallas Cinema Theater seems to exclusively feature movies related to the DC Universe, including Prez, The Unknown Soldier, and G.I. Robot. 

When Courtney and her stepfather visit JSA headquarters, viewers are treated to several fun references. For example, the JSA member portraits look like they could have been painted by Alex Ross, one of the world’s most famous comic book artists. Additionally, some items come straight from the comics, including:

• Jay Garrick’s helmet
• Wildcat’s cowl
• Alan Scott’s power battery
• Dr. Mid-Nite’s owl Hooty

Even the pilot treats viewers to a fun reference. The American Action Movers van used by Courtney’s family has the word “Action” in the same font as that used in the logo for the iconic Action Comics.
